Sexuality and Sexual Identity

Questions surrounding sexuality, sexual expression and sexual identity can arise during adolescence and continue into adulthood.

An individual’s intimate relationships can instigate questions regarding their sexual expression or identity in an attempt to develop greater connection in sexual expression and satisfaction in sexual identity.

A period of exploration and transition can arise following these questions; and how simple or complicated this can be may be influenced by environmental circumstances such as community, culture or religion, or influenced by internal factors, such as personal expectations, values or self identity.

Seeking therapeutic help during this transitional phase can enable an individual to explore their sexuality in a safe and non-judgmental environment. This can be therapeutic and cathartic; leading to a greater understanding of sexual preferences and greater congruence in sexual expression.

If you or someone you know is questioning their sexuality

Questions of sexuality and sexual expression can often be the building blocks of an individual’s social interactions with others, and an individual’s perceived role within their group, whether built on a cultural, racial, religious or social level, can change.

Speaking to a therapist can help an individual explore their hopes and wishes in a non-judgemental, confidential environment.

If you would like to talk to someone immediately in confidence about your sexuality or the sexuality of someone you know, you can contact your local LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender) group.
