Body Image
A negative body image may be the result of low self-esteem /self-confidence or an eating disorder, which causes the individual to feel that their appearance is parallel to feelings of confidence and happiness.
There is often an over-identification with the appearance; and energy and money is expended to satisfy the need to look ‘good’. This need can often be a cover or mask for deep feelings of dissatisfaction with the self.
Identifying the underlying reasons for low body image is often the first step to overcoming this issue; and while low body image has traditionally been associated with young women in their teens and twenties, younger girls and young men are increasingly likely to suffer with this condition.
Eating disorders, depression, low self esteem or low self confidence can often arise with issues of body image; and exploring these in therapy can often bring a deeper appreciation of the self.
If you or someone you know is suffering
There is often a sense of lethargy associated with this condition, which is often the reason why this disorder takes hold.
As body image and self esteem are often connected, it is helpful to begin addressing the root causes of low body image with a counsellor or psychotherapist in order to develop a more balanced view of themselves and a lasting solution.
