Anxiety

Anxiety is often experienced as feeling out of control with thoughts and emotions. Anxiety attacks, also known as panic attacks, can occur at any time and are often a combination of emotional symptoms, such as feeling out of control or confused, with physical symptoms, such as shortness of breathe, dizziness, headache, stomach ache, clammy hands or feeling disorientated.

Anxiety can be very frightening and debilitating when it occurs and the effects can last from a few minutes to many hours.

Anxiety can occur for a variety of reasons when increased stress is felt in general day to day living. Severe forms of anxiety can be controlled well with prescribed medication and therapy can help sufferers develop strategies and understand why it has occurred.

If you or someone you know is suffering

If you think you, or someone you know, is suffering from anxiety they may also experience anxiety attacks, although the two do not always occur together.

It is helpful to have anxiety diagnosed by your doctor or GP if these symptoms become debilitating.

Anxiety is often a result of increased stress in an area of life and exploring this with a counsellor or psychotherapist can be useful for beginning to reduce stress levels.
